    MRP Runs Very Slow

    Sarah Schagelin

      Hello,

We are experiencing problems with our MRP running increasingly slow.  It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour even when the date range is kept to a minimum.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Any thoughts, direction, advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

      Thank you,

      Sarah

          Sarah,

We have encountered the same problem.   One thing we did to

improve the process was to make an Item Groups and Properties for the inventory

and then to identify it before processing. This improved the time greatly

because the system will then process the items identified and not search the

entire database. We set this up because as we added more sku's and details to

the items the time increased exponentially to process.  We are currently

running ver. 2005 live but have encounter the same results with our ver. 2007

          test bench.

If you have any questions, please call me.

          Thanks

A lot of this also depends on what sorts of items you include in your forecasts, and how far out your forecasts run. If you have an entire year in a forecast and that includes every single one of your items, I can imagine that this will be quite painful if you have a few thousand SKUs.

Anthony is correct -defining item groups will help. Make sure that your forecasts against which you run these item groups also include only those items that are in these same groups.

What process of the MRP is running slow. We have encountered many problems of this nature with this and other parts of the program. (Document Generation Wizard, Dunning Wizard, MRP Wizard, etc.) We have found that this problem occurs because of the complexity  and number of records with the required report.

We have resolved and impoved our process with identification of the records within the report. By categorization of the inventory via item group, item type  and properties, we can then run the wizards in smaller batches and increase the time considerably.

Due to the nature of our business, we currently have 30,000+ items in our system and this number grows each day with new 'custom' items.  Is this number of items unusual?  We have tried narrowing MRP down by item group but this did not make much of a difference with the time it took to run.  We are currently working on also subdividing our items by properties and hopefully that will help.

                Thank you for your responses!
