Disaster Recovery Planning (SAP scenarios can be operated in redundant DR sites) is one of the core activities within your High Availability strategy which is typically defined as the requirement to maximize system availability from an end-user point of view.
High Availability strategies normally comprise of activities such as: Reducing planned downtime for backups, updates, patches, etc...; Implement disaster recovery scenarios to minimize impact of disasters; Achieve and Improve service level agreements.
SAP Solution Manager should be regarded as any other SAP dual stack (abap, java) system concerning HA and DRP.

Just noticed your post.... how did implementation go???
FYI - my company is implementing the exact same versions and components (and several more) on Windows with a go-live in 2009. would love to chat and compare notes.
Drop me a line!
I agree with john's suggestions especially following the Run SAP standards. working with Solution Manager for the past 7 yrs, i have realized that it is a key component of an SAP landscape and requries lot of expertise to implement the same.
