Today you can use SAP Analytics Cloud to build stories

New capability Application Design - able to build enterprise dashboards, sophisticated planning/predictive application

Integrated into SAP Analytics Cloud platform; leveraging artifacts, data sources such as live/imported connections, leveraging visualization, planning functionality and integrate predictive applications into applications.  Leverage the existing artifacts provided

Developing custom widgets, scripting capabilities, providing additional functionalities for developer/designer to create complex enterprise dashboards

Consume applications in Digital Boardroom, Mobile, Analytics Hub

Targeting enterprise, professional dashboards

Use scripting capabilities to build enterprise dashboards and sophisticated analytical applications

3jie.jpg

What is an application?  If using SAC to build story

Story is targeted for self-service

Application is an enterprise aspect

Analytical application is a centrally designed application

An application - need scripting capability to build application and customer specific scenarios

Provide widgets, visual component such as filter line, drop down box, scripting capabilities for application design

Coding defines interaction between widgets, pages, applications and from application to story

Application Design has a dedicated development environment

Enterprise aspect, standardization aspect, create reusable part (same application header/footer)

4jie.jpg

Picture to see difference between story and application

Story - walk bridge, guided way, not technical equipment, no specific IT knowledge, self service

Application: walk in glaciers with special equipment - professional equipment, body conditions and technical skills

Need IT knowledge, scripting capabilities, no guided way (or bridge) - application doesn't have guides ways, full flexibility to do what you want.

5jie.jpg

Map to SAC

Story is for self service use cases; covers standard scenarios

For applications - filter products in a group, key figure in a group, not use standard input control but use drop down, list boxes

You can write your own filter logic using scripting capabilities

2 different artifacts but share tables, charts, same user experience

End user should not notice which artifact they are consuming

6jie.jpg

Source: SAP

Targeting enterprise dashboard scenario, application developers create application and end users consume

Different category of capabilities - typical dashboard capabilities, build interactive enterprise dashboards, providing widgets, data driven widgets, R widget, will provide a dynamic layout

Define interactions between table and chart and widgets using scripting capabilities

Reuse code in different places - create script objects for onclick on table or chart

7jie.jpg

Source: SAP

Another category is extensions to allow developers to extend applications with visualizations

Can use R widgets to do this; R coding from internet and put them in design time for R widget; with app design you have scripting for the R widget

Later will provide composites - a reusable object

Will provide custom widgets - developer can use interfaces to create visualizations

Does not mean this is all provided today

9jie.jpg

Source: SAP

With app design, cover closed-loop scenarios, cover planning/predictive and then using app design scripting to do simulations, create an action (create purchase order using OData calls to go to S/4HANA system)

10jie.jpg

Source: SAP

Another category - navigation and integration

Navigation - explorer, Smart features, able to integrate with analytical applications

Provide API to use image/button to use Explorer - jump to explorer, smart grouping

Generate story based on result of table

Jump from analytical application and story automatically created for you

Embed aspect - embed into any other business applications - SuccessFactors, Concur

Communicate to other web pages

Scripting API's available too

11jie.jpg

Enterprise readiness - translation, bookmark, composite, export, shared data source object, performance - deliver lazy loading, parallel execution

Advanced analytics is becoming more critical

Companies have a huge amount of data

As data increases, the types of data changes in nature, and adding to the problem

There is an analytical skill gap; who can make sense of massive amount of data?

Work with executives, make business decisions, deep mathematics, etc.

Executive expectation is increasing; more outcomes and ROI from data

Data science term is difficult to comprehend as part of day to day lives; try to learn difficult tools

Difficult to know where to begin and executive successfully

Effort to "skill up"

2adv.jpg

Source: SAP

Not everyone needs to be a data scientists

Huge number of business analysts, familiar with outcomes, what organizations need

Business user is interested in outcomes

Analytics Cloud is focused on the right hand side of the slide; provide business users with information and what they need to be successful and enable the business analyst

Augmented analysts - make machine learning simple for business users - three ways to do that:

3adv.jpg

Source: SAP

Make machine learning part of the day to day experience for the business analyst

Search to insight is an example; have a search box in Analytics Cloud to find information quickly; natural to any user who has used Google

Help find information quickly - automated business exploration - use smart insights light bulb that provides suggestions and outcome of that chart

Smart Discovery - enable you to point a business question at a data set  - e.g. express interested in order value, and it will build descriptive reports, key influencers, simulations and outlier data points.

Help business user obtain a better understanding of data they already have

Predictions allow you to generate new data; not just a prediction but a probability of something happening

SAP Analytics Cloud integrates into the stories

"A journey" for business analyst, starting with search to insight, and move to automated data discovery and down the road use the Smart Predict

Discovery can happen on your current data set.  For predictions need a set of historical data where you have a known answer

4adv.jpg

Source: SAP

Provide conversational interfaces; one of the goals for search to insight

It will autocomplete for you, resolve ambguity; provides quick answers

Provides a "natural way" to interact with the application

Aid adoption and speed of analysis

Today search to insight is adding charts; future is to plan predictions (big plans)

5adv.jpg

Source: SAP

Above is an example of a Smart Discovery, what influences sales opportunity - you can see key drivers in a single click, see relationships of data

Build story quickly to understand data; find insights that are a "surprise to you"

"Takes the bias" out of the equation

More confidence in results

ASUG BI 2018 Survey Results

The survey results are in, and we appreciate your participation. The 2018 ASUG BI Survey results showed that SAP Analysis for Microsoft Office is the top-used BI client, followed by SAP® BusinessObjects™ Web Intelligence®, and that you want to learn more about SAP BW/4HANA and SAP Analytics Cloud. Great news! This content is included in our upcoming webcasts for 2019.

A Look Back to 2018

Although 2018 is over, we wanted to give you a few stats on what was accomplished throughout last year:

  • 67 webcasts with more than 10,000 viewers and 17,500 registrants
  • Thousands of attendees at ASUG Annual Conference
  • 12 community newsletters (one per month)

Don't Miss the 2018 ASUG Annual Conference

The 2019 ASUG Annual Conference, May 7-9, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida is the ASUG event of the year, providing unparalleled access to customer-driven education, Influence activities, and real-world SAP success stories. If you submitted an abstract to present, in February you will be notified of your status. We greatly appreciate the efforts made by everyone!

We have over 50 BI/BW/HANA sessions planned for ASUG Annual Conference as well as a community meet up in the ASUG area on the floor. The list will be finalized in early February and the  agenda updated.   There are preliminary plans for a BI pre-conference planned this year that you can attend on Monday May 6, and we hope to see you there.

Year-Round Community Opportunities

Your ASUG BI volunteers frequently host educational webcasts as well as sponsor a number of active Influence Councils. Look for webcasts and council launches on the asug.com calendar.

We would like to remind you to keep your ASUG profiles up to date. Doing so will allow you to network with your peers and ensure that you receive timely and relevant information for your business. If you have contacts with other business intelligence companies that are not active in ASUG, please contact them and encourage them to become an active part of our group.

Influence Activities

The ASUG BI communities have several Influence Councils that work with SAP to provide a customer point of view during the development of new products and the continued enhancement of current releases. These councils have been very productive and resulted in the advancement of education, mobile analytics, SAP Analysis for Microsoft Office, and SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence, to name a few. Some of the councils will be meeting at the upcoming 2019 ASUG Annual Conference, whereas others will be meeting virtually via webcast. Be on the lookout for more information regarding these sessions. If you see a topic you are interested in, please visit the ASUG Influence Council web page.

Recruiting for the existing ASUG BI Influence Councils will happen at ASUG Annual Conference in Orlando. Join us.

Last year the ASUG BI Community had 67 webcasts with over 17K registrants.  While the number of webcasts is lower than 2017, the number of registrants is up by 5K.

So I wanted to analyze the numbers using SAP Analytics Cloud Smart Discovery:

Smart Discovery

1asugreg.jpg

One webcast had 53 registered while our top webcast had 1,130 registered.

2asugregdist.jpg

The distribution is shown above; it looks like many webcasts fall in the 100-200 registered range.

3asugtrending.jpg

You can see above we had some webcast peaks in July (planning webcasts) November and December.   Interesting too that it forecasts January 2019 registration

4asugassocwatchreg.jpg

Smart Discovery shows the association between watched and registered and if you hover it will show the tooltip too

5asugdayof week.jpg

Tuesday is a popular day for webcasts, with Thursday second, and last Wednesday

6asugkeyinfluencer.jpg

Key influencers are shown above, very high quality (which is unusual)

8asugunexpected.jpg

One of our dashboarding webcasts shows up as unexpected

I also ran Smart Discovery on the watched webcasts measure:

To apply what I learned at SAP TechEd I also used the beta version of SAP Application Design:

The ASUG BI Community thanks you for completing the survey.  We continue to reach out to our ASUG Members to better understand where ASUG can help and how we are doing in delivery to your educational, networking and SAP influence requirement.  In this latest survey we asked for your feedback on 2018 and what we needed to strive for in 2019.

Q: Which tools are you currently using?

This year I used SAP Analytics Cloud on some of the questions, and the Smart Insights feature appeared automatically after using "Smart Discovery"

q1sac.jpg

q1excel.jpg

This year, for the first time, SAP Analysis Office is the most used BI Client.  Last year it was Web Intelligence.  Both of these topics and more will be featured at the BI+Analytics Conference in March.

The other field had non-SAP tools such as Qlik.

Q: Rank topics of interest

q2sac.jpg

This year BW/4HANA was top; last year it was the BI clients.  BW/4HANA will be on the agenda at the BI+Analytics Conference in March.  We also have several BW/4HANA upcoming webcasts including January 30 BI: SAP BW/4HANA 2.0

"BI" in the Cloud was second.  We have several upcoming SAP Analytics Cloud webcasts scheduled for 2019:

January 15 BI: What's New with Application Design in SAP Analytics Cloud

January 17 BI: What's New: Smart Assist Portfolio in SAP Analytics Cloud

January 22 BI: SAP Analytics Cloud Roadmap Update for Developer APIs and Integration

January 23 BI: SAP Digital Boardroom and SAC Mobile App - What's New, Best Practices and Roadmap

January 24 BI: SAP Analytics Cloud for SAP BW and BW/4HANA

Q: What are your company's plans for the next 6-12 months?

q5excel.jpg

Many of you plan to move to SAP Analytics Cloud in the next 6-12 months.  Don't forget we have several upcoming webcasts in 2019 Upcoming ASUG Business Intelligence Community Webcasts

Q: Where do you go to obtain your information?

q4sac.jpg

91% of you use the SAP Community and many of you (65%) say you use ASUG.com.  The word cloud for other was "Google".

Q: What other topics would be of interest to you for Webcasts and Conferences?

q5cloud.jpg

Above is a word cloud, with wide ranging answers.  It's a free text field, so the text analysis shows this:

q5v2.jpg

Q: Do you participate in ASUG Influence Councils?

The responses on this one show we have some work to do.

q6influence.jpg

The other responses included that individuals want to know the process of joining influence councils.  We will cover this and more on January 29th   INFL: Mobile BI Influence Council Re-launch

Other survey comments:

"Appreciated these sessions are useful. please also plan for BW/4HANA as well. "
